We don’t think that is sustainable! We’ve seen so many water and sanitation projects fall apart: excellent technology and well-intended plans that often fail when installed in rural and peri-urban communities across Asia and Africa because the communities don’t have buy-in, can’t replace broken parts, or the technology isn’t suitable for the environment.
Plus, in many communities where we’ve worked, people are frequently paying more than 30% of their income to buy bottled water! We think that is shameful.
Our technology and model delivers good quality, safe drinking water at prices that are genuinely affordable.
The surplus from water sales are used to:
- cover the entrepreneur’s wages
- maintain the filter
- for projects that are of benefit to the community, e.g. to upgrade toilets and promote hygiene
- a small amount returning to Clean Water Wave so that we can install more CAFE filters and ensure the clean water wave keeps on rolling.
This social enterprise model creates real, sustainable jobs and generates profits to invest in the communities where the CAFE belongs – while helping to create even more social enterprises for others.
If you’re a large-scale organisation or small-scale community group that is interested in partnering with us to deliver clean water with this social enterprise model, get in touch!
